Clean beauty is all the rage these days, and we are here for this on-trend swap to products that are made free of potentially harmful chemicals and irritants like parabens, phthalates, SLS/SLES, microbeads, artificial fragrances and the list goes on. More and more consumers are becoming conscious of the research behind what we put on our bodies going into our bodies, and why it’s important to avoid as many toxins as possible. Most of us apply our deodorants or antiperspirants a minimum of once daily, which means it is possible that our exposure to potentially irritating or unhealthy ingredients is starting to add up.

Natural deodorants, in particular those that are formulated with essential oils, have begun to receive hype in the beauty industry in recent years in part because of their efficacy and in part because of the simplicity behind their list of ingredients. We all want to add more products to our daily lives with ingredients we can pronounce and that come from trusted sources; isn’t it so much easier to understand the use of an essential oil like lime as freshening and deodorizing vs an ingredient like isobutane a known high-risk ingredient to cause toxicant and allergen concerns in humans? Community Members have long loved our crystal fresh spray deodorants, the base of which is created from mineral salts that have been liquified and then blended with cleansing, freshening and deodorizing essential oils. Our deodorants are naturally scented with essential oils, are free from aluminum ingredients like aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium and use a mineral salt that forms naturally post volcanic eruptions (cool, right?) Also free of potential irritants like baking soda, our Community has had such positive things to say about these deodorants over the years in part because of their efficacy and in part because of their convenience.

You’ll notice the mineral salts on the packaging of our deodorants listed as potassium alum. What is this ingredient exactly? This salt is naturally occurring and is usually formed after a volcanic eruption (ours is often sourced from Thailand). This salt is an element of the earth and will contain trace amounts of naturally occurring aluminum element. The salt molecule sits on the surface of the skin and does not absorb because the molecule is too large; what it is doing is forming a natural barrier protectant against the forming of bacteria that causes odors.

Apart from essential oil deodorant, they are many other important ways to swap synthetic body care products for natural alternatives. A perfect complement to a skin care routine, try misting the face after cleansing and before moisturizing each morning and night.

Bare Face makeup remover: gently remove makeup from your face and eyes with this gentle and soothing blend of coconut oil, lavender and chamomile that treats your delicate skin with kindness. Aloe vera soothes and refreshes, witch hazel helps to gently loosen makeup from the skin and lavender is known to help ease skin irritation. Using a cotton pad or your fingertips, gently apply product to the skin and rinse well with warm water.

Navigating the detox period when switching to essential oil deodorant

When it comes to making the switch from synthetic to natural deodorant, may people experience what is sometimes called a ‘detox period’. This is a time in which the body is adjusting and re-regulating after repeated exposure to deodorant or antiperspirant that can sometimes include ingredients that act as sealants to the pores and prevent moisture from leaving the body, which is an important part of our bodies’ natural toxin removal process. Expect your body to take anywhere from about 2-4 weeks to complete its transition, during which time you might notice an uptick in body odor (totally normal!) or you may feel inclined to shower more frequently or touch up during the day.
