LEARN MORE ABOUT THE JASMINE FLOWER
Jasminum officinale is the latin name for the most commonly used jasmine flower in essential oils, also known as ‘poet’s jasmine’. A member of the Oleaceae family, one of the most important plants to study from the essential oil and aromatherapy perspective is the genus jasminum.
Jasmine is a climbing evergreen shrub that is characterized by beautiful, fragrant, small white star-shaped flowers, whose scent becomes more potent at night. One of the most fascinating parts of this exquisite plant is that the highly fragrant flowers become this way at night precisely to attract its pollinators, nocturnal moths. As part of this beautiful process in nature, it’s thought that the reflection of the moonlight off the stark white flowers, alongside their pungent aroma, is what helps the moths find the flowers.
In her book “Essential Oils: A Comprehensive Handbook for Aromatic Therapy” author Jennifer Peace Rhind dives deep into the storied traditional uses and history of the jasmine flower, primarily traced back to India. It’s here that scented flowers like those of the jasmine plant were used as personal decorations worn in the hair by women and as floral garlands by men. Garlands and perfumes made by the delicately scented jasmine flowers were also popular gifts during courtship and in marriage ceremonies. It’s important to note that jasmine flowers were regarded for therapeutic purposes too, not only used in personal care.
Here at Saje we’ve created some of the most wonderfully scented and beneficial wellness products available for physical, emotional and spiritual well-being including the jasmine flower; read on to learn more about them!

LIFESTYLE TIPS FOR INCORPORATING THE JASMINE FLOWER INTO YOUR WELLNESS ROUTINE
We’re enamoured with the experience of deeply inhaling the fragrant jasmine flowers in our neighborhoods and gardens, and are always looking forward to ways we can further incorporate this gorgeous and delicate flower into our homes and lifestyles. Here are a few suggestions for welcoming more jasmine flowers into your life:
- Plant jasmine flowers in your garden or flower bed. Planting jasmine is easy, and can be done anytime between June and November. Jasmine flowers prefer sunny areas with partial shade and soil that is kept moist, particularly during the hottest parts of the summer season.
- Try a jasmine tea. The sweet, fresh flowers blend well with other petals like rose and calendula, but not all types of jasmine are suitable. Make sure to purchase your jasmine tea from a reputable supplier!
- Make a potpourri. Collect the delicate flowers from the plant in your garden or flower bed, allow them to dry thoroughly and arrange in a decorative dish or vase, encouraging the beautiful aroma to fill your space.
It is to India that we must turn to explore the traditions regarding jasmine flowers and their fragrant oil, because this gives us insight into its impact on well-being and its contemporary therapeutic uses.
