Self Care Day Ideas to Support Feeling Your Best
What does ‘self care’ mean to you? What are you doing when you’re ‘taking care of yourself’? Does the term ‘self care’ immediately evoke thoughts of a quiet meditative space or a soothing bath at bedtime? At Saje, we believe that the evolution of self care can be as fun and rewarding to us mentally and emotionally as it can be beneficial physically. We wanted to highlight some of the perhaps lesser talked about ways that we can tap into our inner self and bring joy and light to our days. (Note: meditation and bath time are self care too!)
Self Care Idea: Dance It Out
Dancing is a fun and freeing way to express yourself and move your body. We love letting loose because it costs nothing and there is no right or wrong way to experience the release. Dancing can not only benefit our bodies but also our minds; like all physical activity, our brains release endorphins, also called ‘happy hormones’ to signal a reduction in our stressful feelings and an amplification of feeling zen and blissed out. Focusing on how you want to feel, it can look like envisioning your dream job, the city in which you want to live or a bucket list vacation to a place you’ve always longed to go. Giving helps to communicate to others some of our worldviews; it lets others feel seen, heard, recognized and appreciated. Giving back, whether through financial means like donations or time commitments like volunteer work is rewarding and fulfilling. Consider this: in 2012, the journal Health Psychology published an article linking selfless, well intentioned volunteer work with longer lifespan.
Self Care Idea: Breathe Deeply
Breathwork is a broad term, and has come to encompass a number of breathing practices and techniques in which intentional, mindful breathing is thought to have powerful healing effects on both the body and mind. Any time we can use our own body to help improve our emotional health and de-stress, we are benefitting from choosing to be thoughtful in our approach to our own wellness. A quick google search will net many results in terms of suggested classes, courses or meditations you can explore to learn more about using your breath to impact your overall state.
