What To Look For In A Skin Care Kit
The key products to have in your routine for supple and healthy-looking skin
Your product must-haves for building a skin care kit
Once you’ve reached adulthood, and for some of us all the way back at our pre-teen years, a skin care routine is as imperative to good health as our dental hygiene routine. Our skin is our largest organ, it’s what most people see first when they look in the mirror in the morning, and there are so many reasons to want to keep our skin looking and feeling its best.
When you’re considering the products you want to add to your skin care kit, there are many factors to account for. How much time are you willing to spend on your skin care routine each morning and night? What number of products feels comfortable to you? How confident are you that you can stick to the routine you’re building for yourself? Adding carefully selected products to your skin care kit actually ups the chances that you’ll like how the products perform and feel inclined to keep using them, which is why determining certain things in advance like your skin type and the realistic number of products you’ll use each day is so important.
Before you begin building out your dream skin care kit, consider how important it is to not only know what type of product you’re purchasing, but what each of those products contains. More and more consumers these days are putting pressure on skin care and beauty companies to look at clean, green and renewable ingredients for their formulations. We have more information than we ever have about the types of ingredients we want our skin care products to be formulated without. Here is a non-exhaustive list of some of the culprits that land firmly on the no-no list:
- Synthetic fragrances. Sometimes labelled as ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’, these terms can serve as umbrella words for a whole host of undesirable chemicals that companies are not required to disclose. When in doubt, leave it out.
- Parabens. Butyl, propyl and ethyl parabens have been linked to hormone disruptions which is why many clean and green beauty brands have taken to including ‘paraben-free’ directly on their packaging.
- Polyethylene glycol (PEGs). Often derived from petroleum, these ingredients commonly used as thickeners can be very irritating to the skin.
At Saje we create all of our products, including those you might be adding to your skin care kit, with 100% nature-derived ingredients and essential oils. Read on to learn more about some of our top picks for healthy, glowing skin:
Cleansing products in your skin care kit
What anyone will tell you when you’re looking to build a complete skin care kit is that you have to really nail the basics: cleansing, toning and hydrating. There are lots of options when it comes to treatments like serums or elixirs, but having the basics covered is the foundation of healthy and happy skin.
A cleansing product we love for those who identify with having problem skin that is prone to excess oiliness, blemishes and occasional breakouts is a cleansing bar called Zap. A soothing yet powerful natural cleansing option for those looking for deeper removal of dry, dead skin cells, dirt and oil, this bar has been formulated to reveal bright, fresh and radiant skin. Aloe vera provides a hydrating base to soothe and balance the skin, coconut oil promotes skin’s regeneration and tea tree, one of the most commonly used essential oils for problem skin, deeply cleanses and refreshes.
Another product we are big fans of when it comes to building our skin care kit is a pre-cleansing, makeup removing product called Bare Face. when you want to gently remove makeup from the entire face including they eye area, this wonder product will help you do it. The base is made from fractionated coconut oil to be gentle yet effective at removing all traces of makeup from the skin, lavender hydrosol helps to ease irritations and frankincense essential oil is both nurturing and restorative. Using your fingers, a cotton ball or soft cloth, apply to skin in a circular motion and rinse with warm water.
Toning products in your skin care kit
The step that comes after cleansing, commonly called toning your skin, is the one people tend to understand the least about, thus being prone to skipping it altogether. We’re here to say, don’t skip this important step! Toner helps to remove any last traces of dirt, grime and impurities after cleansing, and helps to rebalance the skin. Because most toners are water based, they are prepping the skin to receive and hold even more moisture as they are the step between cleansing and hydrating. Toner is also a way to feel refreshed and revived, since most toners are applied as a mist or spritz.
Our number one love when it comes to adding moisture and prepping the skin is Rose Mist. This mist is made from distilled water and pure rose otto essential oil, one of the most sought-after essential oils not just in skin care but in aromatherapy. Naturally hydrating, rose is also gentle and soothing on even the most sensitive skin. Spritz generously after cleansing or anytime you need a pick-me-up!
Another popular toner we offer at Saje is called Bliss Mist. Unlike Rose Mist that focuses on one singular essential oil, Bliss Mist is chock full of eight (!!!) different essential oils that are known for their ability to calm, soothe and balance the skin after cleansing. Carrot is deeply hydrating, sandalwood helps to restore radiance, geranium is restorative while cypress helps the skin feel balanced. Spritz as needed and watch your skin glow!
Treatment products in your skin care kit
As mentioned earlier, treatments for the skin can include serums, elixirs and face masks, among others. These are skin care products that aren’t necessarily part of your everyday skin care kit, but that can have many benefits when it comes to skin that is soft, supple, glowing and healthy.
As the last step in our skin care routine, we like to add 3-4 drops of our favorite elixir called Rejuvenating Elixir. to the pads of our fingertips before pressing gently into the skin. This elixir is a blend of superfood, antioxidant-rich carrier oils like evening primrose, rosehip and apricot kernel, and restorative and replenishing essential oils like neroli, rose otto and sandalwood to reduce the signs of aging and promote the appearance of a healthy glow.
Clay face masks are all the rage, and we’re here for it. Our Clay Cleanse mask is made from kaolin clay, a purifying clay mineral that helps to reduce excess oil and soothe the skin, ultra-absorbent charcoal powder to draw out dirt and oil from clogged pores and frankincense essential oil to restore vitality by replenishing moisture to dry skin. We recommend using the mask 1-2 times per week by applying to clean, dry skin, leaving on for 10-15 minutes and gently rinsing with warm water.
Accessories in your skin care kit
Other items we think should make the cut when it comes to building your skin care kit that aren’t exactly skin care products are cleansing sponges and facial massage rollers. While it’s the nourishing and skin-soothing plant ingredients themselves that do the heavy lifting when it comes to the appearance of healthy and well-maintained skin, these accessories behind the scenes are sometimes just as valuable in promoting the youthful and radiant look and feel of our faces.
One of our favorite ways to elevate our cleansing routine is with a cleansing sponge called Konjac Kare Yam. Made from a 100% natural and biodegradable vegetable fiber called konjac, this sponge has been infused with yam extract that contains enriched protein amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Gentle enough to use daily, these sponges can be used with or without cleanser for a mild daily exfoliant and to help promote an even skin tone and a reduction in the appearance of pore size. Try adding one to your cleansing routine!
We’re also big fans of using our Clear Quartz Crystal Roller for facial massage and stimulation to promote increased circulation and blood flow to the skin. Using a crystal roller for facial massage is an ancient beauty ritual, thought to soothe, smooth and rejuvenate the skin with a gentle massage. We recommend using light but firm pressure, starting at the center of the face and moving outwards towards the frame. Try adding 3-4 drops of your favorite elixir for an extra treat for the skin!
Lifestyle habits that complement your skin care kit
Using high-quality, clean, renewable and sustainable ingredients to help take care of your skin are just some of the important steps you can take each day towards obtaining and maintaining a healthy and youthful glow. Of course, many other lifestyle habits factor into the overall health of our skin, too. Here are three common sense tips for improved overall health and well-being:
- Get your beauty sleep. The skin does all sorts of things while we sleep, including heal and repair itself. Aim for 7-9 hours of good quality, uninterrupted sleep each night to allow your skin the proper time it needs for restoration.
- Move your body each day. Standing up frequently throughout the workday if you are usually sitting at a desk, taking a walk while also taking a virtual meeting, making a point to stretch each time you visit the bathroom; these seemingly small habits can make a big difference in your overall movement during the day.
- Drink enough water. This one we cannot stress enough. The effects of not being properly hydrated will show up on your face quickly. Dehydrated skin places an emphasis on fine lines, wrinkles and even undereye circles. When in doubt, pour yourself a glass of water.
Healthy skin starts from within and choosing the right products to build your ultimate skin care kit is just another one of the ways you can continue to invest in your wellness.
