When it comes to natural cleaning products, it’s more important to look at what they are formulated without. The Environmental Working Group tells us that “ingredient labels are mandatory for food, cosmetics and drugs – but not for cleaning products.” Manufacturers aren’t required to disclose all ingredients in their cleaners and many don’t, including some “green” cleaner makers. This means it’s really hard to make an informed choice about what you’re using to clean your home. And, with the list of chemicals shown to be harmful growing all the time, it can feel like a challenge to know which products on the market are going to not only be effective, but also natural and safe for you and your family to use in your home. The benefits of using natural cleaning products
Using natural cleaning products is beneficial for many reasons. First, you don’t risk exposure to something called toxic body burden. Toxic body burden (LINK: https://www.ewg.org/research/body-burden-pollution-newborns) is the accumulation of chemicals that collect in our bodies as a result of repeated exposure or use, especially over the long term. This means even though a chemical may not harm you right away, it can collect in your body and potentially cause future health problems. Second, you drastically lower the incidence of respiratory issues that can be caused by breathing in harsh chemicals and detergents frequently found in synthetic products that have been linked to a host of respiratory concerns like asthma and labored breathing. Third, you are contributing to a more positive and friendly environment in which there are less synthetic chemicals being used that ultimately enter our airways and water spaces.
Ingredients in natural cleaning products
All of our natural cleaning products are formulated without synthetics or fillers. They are non-toxic and free of ingredients we don’t believe are necessary to achieve cleanliness in the home. Our home cleaning products are biodegradable and made from renewable, raw materials. Some of these ingredients include:
Capryl/Capryl Glucoside is made from fatty alcohol and glucose from coconut, kernel oil and vegetable sugars. It works to remove dirt from household items and surfaces, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom. Look for it in Multi-Clean, an all-purpose cleaner that deodorizes surfaces and removes dirt and grease with the grime-fighting power of peppermint, lavender and rosemary essential oils.
Sodium Carbonate is made from a non-marine mineral called trona, which is a compound most commonly processed into baking soda . It’s purpose in our home cleaning products is to soften water, to maximize the efficacy of the foaming and cleaning ingredients, and to act as a pH adjuster.
Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropylsulfonate is a mouthful, but when broken down very simply, this is an ingredient that is derived from raw fruits and vegetables. It’s processed by combining sugar and wax-like fatty acids with acidic ingredients, then balanced with a base. The benefits this plant based ingredient provides are foaming and cleansing, which is why it’s a powerhouse part of our Dish Wish dish soap.
