Rose is one of the most precious of all essential oils, and there are many good reasons for why this pungent and sweet flower is so cherished in aromatherapy. Often referred to as ‘the queen of essential oils’, rose has a rich yet delicate scent unlike any other flower which is almost exactly the same aroma the essential oil emits.
Rose (latin name Rosa damascena) is part of the genus Rosa in the plant family called Rosaceae. Having originated in Asia, today you can find the beautiful blooms of the rose bush being grown all over the world. The beautiful, iconic roses that we know and love have a recognizable, floral aroma that has made them one of the world’s most popular flowers for thousands of years. Wonderfully diverse, rose is used in everything from skincare to fragrances to desserts and luxurious baths, not to mention as a symbol of love and a regular feature in floral bouquets.
Roses are one of the most popular - if not the most beloved - flowers in the world and the diversity of uses shows it. Not just grown for essential oil, roses are some of the most sought after cut flowers. A traditional symbol of love, roses are often given to a loved one on holidays like birthdays and anniversaries, and are a regular feature in wedding bouquets. Whether your favourite colour is red, white, pink, orange or a dozen other shades, there are roses to match your fancy.

Rose essential oil as part of your skin care routine
The most precious of all essential oils, we bet you didn’t know it takes approximately 60 full size rose blooms to produce one singular drop of pure rose essential oil, often referred to as rose otto. It is thought to have a number of benefits, including elevating the mood, improving the appearance of skin and encouraging feelings of love and balance. We love to include rose essential oil as part of our skincare routine for soft, supple and nourished skin.

Bliss mist facial toner: when you’re looking for balanced and harmonized skin, look no further than this calming and relaxing treat for your skin. A toner is an important part of our skincare routine as it nourishes and rebalances skin post cleansing, and this mist includes other precious and nourishing ingredients like deeply hydrating sandalwood, frankincense and carrot essential oils. Shake well before each use, then mist your face, neck and chest area.
Rejuvenating elixir: restore radiance and replenish moisture in skin that has lost its lustre or that feels dry or dehydrated with this restorative and nourishing blend of carrier oils and essential oils specially formulated for skin that feels depleted. Evening primrose, a superfood that’s rich in antioxidants, is blended with citrusy-floral neroli to help improve the appearance of skin’s texture and replenishing rose otto to promote a youthful glow. After cleansing and toning, gently message 3-4 drops into the skin.
Rose essential oil as part of your self care routine

Goddess body lotion: our Goddess body lotion was the winner of ‘best body lotion’ according to FASHION magazine and their annual beauty awards in 2018. We love this lotion because it’s creamy, it’s soft, it absorbs easily, it doesn’t sit heavy or greasy on our skin, and it smells simply heavenly when applied to fresh, cleansed skin. The base of our Goddess lotion is formulated with nourishing aloe vera leaf juice, apricot kernel oil and vitamin e, and then blended with soothing and balancing essential oils like geranium, ylang ylang and rose. Apply liberally as an all over body lotion as desired.
Rose essential oil for those who love the scent of fresh flowers

Pure rose essential oil and our favorite ways to use it
We offer a pure, 100% natural and undiluted rose essential oil single note at Saje, to ensure our product assortment includes the very best essential oil in the world. Because rose essential oil comes with such a high price tag (as mentioned earlier, the volume of plant material required to produce the oil and the labor intensity required prior to distillation), you’ll often find rose essential oil offered in dilutions of 10% or 15%, pre-blended with a skin-friendly carrier oil like grapeseed or jojoba. This is a cost effective way to allow you to still experience the innumerable benefits of rose without breaking the bank. We love having the opportunity to experience rose essential oil blended with various herbs, flowers and citruses in many of our wellness and self care products.
Suggested uses for 100% pure rose essential oil can include:
- Add 1-3 drops to a carrier oil of your choice and apply to the body as desired
- Add 1-2 drops to a bowl of steaming water or a facial steamer and breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes
- Add a few drops to a diffuser of your choice
- Use in massage by adding 1-3 drops to a carrier oil of your choice and gently massage into the body
Because of the preciousness of rose essential oil, we always recommend starting with the lowest number of drops and increasing as desired.
Incorporating rose essential oil into your wellness rituals
Lastly, we wanted to include some of the ways that you may choose to incorporate rose essential oil, or products that include rose essential oil, into your daily routines and wellness habits. Because rose can have such a soothing effect and help the body and mind to feel balanced, it’s easily added to certain wellness practices you may already enjoy:
- Journaling. We’ve all heard how therapeutic it can be to get our thoughts down on paper. Whether it’s a quick line or two in a bullet journal or a brain dump at the end of the day, try incorporating scent into your ritual. You could add a few drops of rose essential oil to your diffuser before you begin, or even add 1-2 drops to a tissue and breathe in as you write.
- Meditation. One of the most effective ways to get in touch with your inner mind and spirit is through the practice of meditation. There is no right or wrong way to meditate; what matters most is the discipline to show up for yourself and work to quiet your mind. You might try adding a drop of oil on your forehead before you close your eyes, or again you might choose to diffuse so the scent engulfs your space as you quiet your mind and body.
- Deep breathing. When we’re looking to feel calmed, centered and balanced, nothing is more important than focusing on our breath. Deep breathing is a simple practice you can employ anytime, anywhere when you are looking to bring stillness into the body. A breathing practice we love here at Saje is what we refer to as a Saje Breath: add 1-2 drops of essential oil to the palm of your hand (or, you can roll generously a product of your choice like Goddess roll-on), rub your hands together briskly, make a cupping shape over your nose and mouth and begin to breathe. We suggest a long, slow inhale through the mouth, holding for a few seconds at the top of your breath, and exhaling slowly out through the mouth. Repeat this simple breathing exercise 2-3 times, or as often as feels comfortable to you.
