Learn more about essential oils for cough & cold season

It’s that time of year that none of us look forward to – that sniffly, achy, keep-you-up-through-the-night, cough and cold season. Try as we might to avoid it, it’s often inevitable that we end up on our couch in our pyjamas with a box of kleenex nearby at least a couple of days out of each year.

What is it that causes a cold? There are many myths, like going outside with wet hair causes a cold or that you have to eat nothing but chicken noodle soup in the winter months to prevent catching one, but the truth is that colds and flus are caused by viruses. Though they are more likely to circulate during colder weather seasons, your chances of catching one indoors are higher than catching one outdoors.

The Mayo Clinic says that the common cold is a viral infection in your nose and throat and is relatively harmless, though it might not feel that way while you’re sneezing and coughing and blowing your nose. Though there is no cure for the common cold, we want to share some of the ways we use 100% natural, plant-based essential oil wellness products to support feeling better fast during cough & cold season.

Relieving essential oils for cough & cold season

Two of the most well-known essential oils in aromatherapy that are commonly found in products known to treat symptoms of cold like cough are eucalyptus and tea tree. When describing either of these essential oils, you’ll typically hear descriptors like bracing, fresh, clearing or medicinal used to not only shed light on the way they smell, but the way they work to get the body feeling better when you’re under the weather. Eucalyptus is reported in aromatherapy to ease breathing during colds and to help prevent illness from airborne irritants, which is no surprise as its commonly referred to as ‘the breathing oil’. Tea Tree on the other hand is reported to help the body fight off illness like cough & cold and to help you feel restored, fast. At Saje, we offer a number of cough & cold products to support relief and restoration that contain these powerful essential oils:

Two essential oils we are also big fans of when it comes to cough & cold season are frankincense and cinnamon. Frankincense is reported in aromatherapy to be supportive and balancing to the respiratory system, and the warmth and spice of cinnamon when experiencing symptoms of cough & cold is akin to the comfort of a hug. You’ll often find these essential oils in products designed to help you feel relieved and restored during cold season, as they are renowned for helping you get the rest and relaxation you need to recover. Here are a couple of products we love to help you feel comforted and soothed:

Ways to feel your best during cough & cold season

Apart from using natural and plant-based wellness products to support your overall health and well-being, there are many suggestions for ways in which you can keep your system functioning optimally and bounce back quickly during cough & cold season.

Our top tips:

  1. Hydrate the right way and do it often. Staying hydrated when you have a cold is key, as you lose fluids through mucous, blowing your nose and from coughing. Typically, it’s best to hydrate with clear fluids like water, herbal tea, soup broth and electrolyte-containing beverages to help your body stay nourished.
  2. Get your zzz’s. Your body needs proper rest to recover when you’re ill and sleeping more than usual when you have a cold can help you to build back up your immune system and fight off illness.
  3. Take good care. Though a cold is usually minor, it can really knock you off your feet. Prioritize self-care like taking a warm bath or extra-long shower, staying warm and cozy, resting when necessary and generally treating yourself well.

We hope these products and tips to ward off cough & cold season can help you feel your best all year long!
