Home hygiene

Last Updated: 04/11/2024

Maintaining a healthy and happy home is top of mind for many of us in our Communities. We believe in the importance of keeping our space supportive of our collective wellness, and we’re happy to share some of our favorite ways to incorporate natural cleaning products into your daily routines.

What should remain top of mind for all of us, are guidelines from health governing bodies like WHO & the CDC who have continued to support messaging that says hand washing is the #1 way we can keep ourselves healthy, and prevent the spread of germs. A quick refresher is to ensure you are scrubbing all parts of the hands and wrists for 20-30 seconds and then rinsing and drying thoroughly. A best practice? Wash your hands as often as possible. Before and after eating, using the bathroom, after being in public spaces and after touching shared surfaces like door handles or light switches. Following up with a nourishing and rehydrating lotion is a must - your hands are enduring a lot. Try our Clean Hands lotion to keep skin feeling soothed.

There are a number of other ways you can keep wellness top of mind during periods of time when you are in your home more frequently.

HOME HYGIENE FOR KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS

Multi Clean is an all-purpose cleanser that can be used to clean many of the surfaces in your kitchen & bathroom. The formula is 100% plant based and it’s great for removing dirt and cutting through grease. You can use this product to freshen and deodorize areas like countertops, toilets and sinks, as it’s great for surfaces like ceramic, laminate and tile. Where you want to be careful not to use this product is on wood (it’s too porous), stainless steel, marble and granite, as it can leave them looking streaky or cloudy. All of the alcohols in our home cleaning products are grain derived, typically coming from fermented corn. Grain alcohols are an important part of natural cleaning products, as they help to both cleanse and dissolve dirt on surfaces. An added bonus? You should notice you don’t feel the need to “air out” your space after using Multi Clean, as this product (and all of our products!) are free of ammonia, chlorine bleach or synthetic fragrances, which can be irritating to your respiratory system.

Multi Clean can also be used to spot clean tile or laminate floors, but avoid using this on hardwood. Use just a small amount of product and then a thoroughly wet mop which will dilute the product and ensure there is no residue left behind. You can also try adding to water a few drops of a diffuser blend like Liquid Sunshine, which is a high concentration of citrus essential oils like grapefruit, orange and lime, to clean your floors. A best practice for any home cleaning product is to spot check a small area, to ensure this product is suitable for use in your home. One last tip for Multi Clean in the home? Deep cleaning your fridge, and wiping down all of your shelves and drawers.

HOME HYGIENE FOR BEDROOM AND LIVING AREAS

Experts are making recommendations to wash your sheets and bedding more frequently, especially if anyone in your home has been feeling under the weather. Reusable, eco-friendly wool dryer balls, like those found in our Laundry Love set, are excellent alternatives to synthetic dryer sheets. Wool dryer balls provide the same benefits, such as reducing static cling and speeding up drying time, but without artificial fragrances, and creating extra waste with disposable dryer sheets. Dryer balls will last for approximately 2 years, and can be used with any colorless essential oils, like our Sweet Sheets fresh laundry blend, formulated with citrusy bergamot and fresh lemon . Other great options include single note essential oils like eucalyptus, peppermint or lavender to naturally freshen your clothing and bedding.

A great way to keep fabrics like curtain panels, cushions and bedding feeling refreshed between washing is to spritz with our mists, like Sweet Sheets, a refreshing blend of deodorizing lemon and sweet lavender, or Fresh Air, a revitalizing blend of neutralizing tea tree and clearing pine.

Our friends at the Environmental Working Group, or EWG, reviewed over 2,000 household cleaning products and researched different ingredients to assess health risks, which produced several key findings:

  • 53% of cleaning products contained ingredients known to harm the lungs
  • 22% have chemicals reported that cause asthma to develop in otherwise healthy persons

According to the EWG, only 7% of cleaning products adequately disclosed their contents: at Saje, we are proud to be 100% transparent about the ingredients we use, 100% of the time. You can read more about their findings here.to read more about their findings

With health and wellness at the forefront for so many of us, now is a great time to reassess the way we keep our homes and working environments feeling safe and clean.
