Copaiba - What is it?

Last Updated: 07/21/2025

About the Oil

Sourced from the resin of towering South American trees, copaiba essential oil has long been a therapeutic staple in Amazonian medicine. It boasts a mild, woody-balsamic aroma and is particularly rich in β-caryophyllene, a sesquiterpene celebrated for its ability to modulate inflammation and pain through the body’s endocannabinoid system — without the psychoactive effects of THC. Gentle yet powerful, copaiba supports both physical and emotional recovery, making it a go-to for calming blends and daily restoration.

Behind The Science (Made Simple)

Copaiba’s powerhouse compound, β-caryophyllene, acts as a selective CB2 receptor agonist, meaning it communicates with a key part of the body’s endocannabinoid system — the CB2 receptors — to help manage inflammation, immune responses, and nervous system balance. Unlike THC, it doesn’t affect the brain’s CB1 receptors, so it offers pain and stress relief without psychoactivity.

CB2 activation has been shown to:

  • Lower inflammatory cytokines
  • Calm overactive immune responses
  • Support tissue regeneration in nerve and skin cells
  • Promote analgesic effects through peripheral and spinal mechanisms

This makes copaiba a compelling natural support for both topical and internal applications related to chronic inflammation, pain, and skin trauma.

How and Where It Grows

Copaiba trees (Copaifera spp.) grow in the Amazon rainforest and other parts of Central and South America. Rather than being harvested destructively, the trees are tapped for oleoresin, much like maple syrup — allowing for sustainable use. The oil is then extracted via steam distillation from the raw resin, resulting in a pale-yellow liquid with a soft, earthy aroma.

Use in Ancient Medicine

For generations, Indigenous Amazonian communities have relied on copaiba balsam as a cure-all for wounds, inflammation, and even internal ailments. The resin was taken orally to soothe ulcers and respiratory complaints, while topically it was applied to bruises, insect bites, and infections. Its deep ties to traditional healing underscore its enduring value in modern wellness.

Symbolism

Copaiba is connected to the root chakra, grounding and steadying. It’s symbolic of calm strength, emotional resilience, and inner healing. In energetic practices, it’s used to promote safety, trust, and nervous system regulation, helping create space for reflection and rest.
